A Brief History of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
Originally formed on October 27, 1930, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church represents the merger of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Garnettsville, and Holy Trinity Church, Grahamton. Although the historical records are cloudy, it appears that the Garnettsville congregation began in 1868, and the Grahamton congregation was established by 1901. Archibald Magill Robinson, a layman, may have initiated both parishes. By 1909, clergy from Louisville took the train to Meade County each weekend to hold services.
Following the 1930 merger, the congregation met at the newly constructed Holy Trinity Memorial Chapel at Grahamton until the U.S. Government purchased the Grahamton property in 1942 to accommodate an expansion of Ft. Knox Military Base (leading to the extinction of both the Garnettville and Grahamton communities). For the next 15 years, the congregation worshipped in the home of a parishioner and then in Cedar Gove Methodist Church.
In 1954, Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation donated the land at the corner of Oaklawn and Gay (now Hill) Streets in Brandenburg for the present church building, which was dedicated on October 14, 1956. The Bishop charged the congregation to worship weekly, be witnesses for Jesus Christ in everyday life, and share the good things God gives them through the church.
Over the years, Holy Trinity’s outreach into the community has shifted to accommodate evolving local needs. Whether providing a kindergarten program, offering its facilities as a base for the American Red Cross and HUD following April 1974 tornado, hosting an AA meeting or a Boy Scout troop, or serving as the hub of the Brandenburg Fresh Stop/New Roots initiative, Holy Trinity has demonstrated resilience, compassion, and practical assistance as Christ’s people in Meade County.
